What's Happening Now
This Sunday, July 15, Pastor Linda Johnson Seyenkulo, our missionary in Liberia, will be visiting Bethlehem. Please plan to be here to learn more about Liberia, as well as her work as a trainer and curriculum developer there.
Share the Harvest
Be sure to take a moment to see our wonderful Share the Harvest Vegetable Garden on the southeast side of the church. There is a wonderful variety of delicious veggies that will all be donated to our local food pantries. A big thank you to all the volunteers for who have spent many hours planting, weeding and watering. Additional volunteers are always needed and very welcome! If you are interested in helping, please speak to Marilyn Klein.
Community Blood Drive
Are you interested in donating blood and becoming partners in saving lives? Join Bethlehem Lutheran in a Community Blood Drive with the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints and the American Red Cross on Thursday, July 26, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. which will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, located at 11107 S. Vincennes Ave. in the gymnasium. If you are at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health, you may be eligible to give blood. Giving blood is safe, simple, and helps save lives. Each pint of blood that is donated may be helping as many as three people. Visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-733-2767 for an appointment. You can save up to 15 minutes when you donate by using RapidPass! Visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass for more information. Sponsor code for online appointments is “Morgan Park Latter Day Saints”.
Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church has five separate scholarship awards available to full time students in accordance with the policy filed with the Church Council. On Sunday, July 29, scholarship checks will be awarded to those college students who applied for these scholarships.
Centering prayer is a practice that is designed to build mindfulness to the presence of God. Our bodies and minds are often busy and distracted to the point that we can miss what is right in front of us. Centering prayer helps us learn how to quiet our bodies and minds to become centered in the reality of God’s presence in our lives. You are invited to practice centering prayer each Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Weather permitting we meet in the baptismal garden. Pastor Jennie will offer guidance for those who are new to the practice. Centering prayer is finished at 9:15.
Front Yard Fridays
Last year Bethlehem's Peace Team challenged everyone to get to know their neighbors, especially those we don't already know well. This summer the Congregation Council wants to help facilitate community building by helping members plan Front Yard Friday events. We'd work with you to plan a casual get together with your neighbors in your front yard. The goal is to build community and relationships one block at a time. Are you interested in being part of a planning team for these fun and easy events? Or are you willing to host a Front Yard Friday on your block? Talk with Pastor Jennie or Gretchen McDowell.
Church Office Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to help in the church office answering the phone a few hours each day from July 23 through August 3, while Susan Evans is on vacation. If you are able to help, please contact Susan to schedule a specific day you can work.
Living Lutheran Magazine
Are you interested in receiving Living Lutheran (formerly The Lutheran) magazine? If so, please contact Susan in the office to be included through the general subscription of the church at the reduced rate of $11.75 per subscription. If you currently have a subscription that you would like to discontinue, please contact the office with that request also.
Phone Prayer Group
You are invited to be part of a group that meets by phone at 6:45 a.m. every Wednesday for prayer. This is a wonderful way to pray together from the comfort of our own homes. The group shares their prayer concerns for themselves and for others and grows in faith together. Want to learn more? Talk with Pastor Jennie.
The Prayer Chain continues to be a vital part of the prayer life of our church. Please contact Laurie Owen at firstname.lastname@example.org with any requests.
Sign the Greeting Cards
Just a gentle reminder for everyone to stop in Good Sam Hall after worship on Sunday mornings and sign the “Get Well” and “Thinking of You” cards that are sent out each week to Bethlehem members, family and friends. We have been told so many times how this ministry, spearheaded by Larry Poetzinger, is so meaningful and uplifting to those who receive the cards – it expresses to them that they are not alone, that they have not been forgotten, and that someone cares about them. On each card is a beautiful picture and words of comfort and inspiration – all they need is your signature! Please take a moment on your way out to help in this important effort. Also, if you know someone who would benefit from receiving one of these cards please contact Larry or the church office and we will be happy to include them.
Men's Discussion Group
The Bethlehem Men’s Discussion Group meets on Saturday mornings at 8:30 a.m. at Markland Hubbard Gourmet Provisions Shop located at 1739 W. 99th Street. We come together to share our own insights with the other participants for the benefit of all. All men are invited to join!

An important update regarding credit card donations. Effective immediately, it is now possible to donate to the church using MasterCard, Visa or Discover credit cards. You’re invited to go to our website, bethlehem-chicago.org, click first on “Donate Now,” then on “make a donation” for more information, to register and to donate.
